Update: 9.10.2020: Last night, the Northern California Bear Fire exploded near Oroville in Butte County. 250,000 Acres are destroyed. We are ramping up to help people prepare for animal care and to support those that are evacuated. We are also working with groups caring for some of the burned cats that had been rescued. There is free pet product pantry to support displaced families. The Pet Pantry has become mobile in response to the COVID situation and still provides free services to the nearby communities. The CZU August Lightning Complex of fires burning in southern San Mateo County and northern Santa Cruz County expanded to 63,000 acres overnight and was 5 percent contained Saturday morning, according to Cal Fire.
An estimated 77,000 residents of the area have been evacuated due to the fires, and as they scramble for housing, their pets and livestock are temporarily homeless as well. Because of the intensity of the fire and the speed many people were taken by surprise and evacuation has been difficult, treacherous and once again animals abandoned. Large-animal evacuation centers have been set up to prevent horse deaths. People have been encouraged to release their animals from confinement so they have a chance to escape. Rescuers will be waiting to rescue and provide medical care for the abandoned and wandering homeless animals that will need unfathomable medical care from burns as well as food and shelter.
